On 08 May 2018, Tuesday Judge Hosne Ara Akhter of Satkhira Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal (Nari o SishuNirjaton Daman Tribunal of Satkhira) declared the sentence of life imprisonment for 4 persons (2 women and 2 men) in accusation of trafficking a young Bangladeshi girl to India and for selling her to a brothel. The court also gave penalty of fine for 50,000 taka and 6 months rigorous imprisonment in failure of payment of the fine.
The convicted are Rahima Khatun, Masura Khatun, Abdur Rashid and Abdul Jalil of MahmudmpurBadampur village of Satkhira Sadar Upazila. The court also acquitted one accused named Ashraful Islam.
It has been known from case documents that on 2 January 2010, the accused persons trafficked Rupali dasi, the daughter of the Gita Rani in lure of work. Later on, they sold them to a brothel of Mumbai, India. Ruapli communicated with her mother through mobile from there and asked to rescue her. Gita Rani filed a case in this regard. Gita Rani also sought legal assistance from Sodesh-Satkhira1 through it’s ASK legal aid programme. Adv. Najmunnahar Jhumur, panel lawyer of Sodesh-Satkhira’s ASK legal aid programme conducted the case on behalf of Gita Rani.
