Bangladeshi National Shot to Death by Indian BSF: Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) Expresses Concern

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses concern over the death of a Bangladeshi National by a bullet shot by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) inside Indian Territory near Kantivita border under Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon.

According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the locals, at midnight on 20 October 2018, when Rabbani (25) along with few others entered into India through the border near pillar no.385/5-S, the BSF members opened fire at them. Rabbani died on spot. Despite the decrease in the number of killings in the border this year, this counts to be the second incident in this month where a Bangladeshi National fell victim to border killing. On 14 October 2018, another Bangladeshi National named Mamun Rashid (30) was shot dead by BSF on Dana and Lobha border in Kanaighat of Sylhet.

Such killings on the border, is extremely regrettable. It needs to be noted that BSF members since long have been killing Bangladeshis violating international rules. Despite their repetitive assurance of discontinuing the use of firearms on the border and them being alert about it, and that they would use rubber bullets if necessary, such assurances have no effect in reality. ASK hopes that the Bangladesh government will take a tough stance against such killings of Bangladeshi nationals and create diplomatic pressure on India in this regard.
