The struggles of Physically Disabled Hridoy Sarkar for admission in Dhaka University
Hridoy Sarkar, a physically disabled young man, went to Dhaka University to give the entrance exam under the ‘Kha’ Unit of Faculty of Arts. It is to be noted that 17 years old Hridoy, being physically disabled, was carried into the exam venue on his mother’s arms. A photo of such was shared in social media which went viral in a few days. This news was covered in the news media as well.
With success, he was able to pass the exam; however, his name did not appear in the Merit List. He then went to apply under the Disabilities Quota in the Dhaka University. When he was taking the form, the University authorities mentioned that their policy only offers quota for the visually impaired, deaf and hearing impaired, and speech impaired students, and the physically disabled are not considered for the disabilities quota under that policy. This news was broadcast in the news media as well.
On being made aware of the incident, on 7 November 2018, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) took the initiative, where Sheepa Hafiza, Executive Director, ASK, along with four other ASK representatives, went to meet with the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, directly, regarding this issue. There the Executive Director made an application to him requesting the authorities to consider Hridoy’s situation, as well as the situation of all other physically disabled students; and thereafter, reform the quota policy so as to incorporate all such persons with disabilities under the disabilities quota. The University informed her that they had kept Hridoy’s situation into consideration.
Subsequently, as of date, Hridoy Sarkar is admitted in Dhaka University where he is studying International Relations.
