Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, was set ablaze by few students of the same Madrasa on the direction of the principal, Sirajul Islam, on 6 April allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against the principal for sexually harassing her late the previous month. Few local Awami League leaders were also involved in this incident. She was admitted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College in a very serious condition. ASK’s lawyers and field staff immediately on the happening of the incident, contacted Nusrat and her family and expressed their will to provide medical and legal aid to them. After being advised by ASK, Nusrat’s family filed a case against the perpetrator, while she received medical treatment publicly. She lost her battle for life on 10 April, five days after she was set afire — an incident that sparked outrage all over the country. On this incident, ASK arranged for a Human Chain. On 24 April 2019, a representative team of ASK went to Feni where they met Nusrat’s family members, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Public Prosecutor (PP) and other lawyers to talk about Nusrat’s issue. ASK maintained constant communication with Nusrat’s family. PBI issued a charge sheet against all the perpetrators. ASK’s lawyer assisted the PP directly in Feni, and the case was resolved quite fast. The court has already given its judgment on this case.
