link: Youth killed in ‘gunfight’ with RAB in Keraniganj
A youth in his late twenties was killed in a reported gunfight with the members of the Rapid Action Battalion at Keraniganj in Dhaka on Friday morning during a drive against drug trade.
Identity of the dead could not be known until Friday evening and the body was kept at morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
A team of RAB-10 took the body to DMCH in the morning, said Bachchu Mia, inspector and in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost.
RAB media and legal wing director Ashique Billah said that they were tipped off that a drug peddling group was waiting near Swapnadhara Housing area of Keraniganj.
RAB-10 team rushed there to nab the group.
Sensing the presence of RAB members, the suspected drug peddlers opened fire, forcing the RAB team to retaliate.
After few minutes, drug peddlers fled the scene and the RAB team found a youth shot, said Ashique.
The body was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital at about 5:00am where doctors pronounced him dead, police inspector Bachchu Mia said.
Earlier this month, at least three people were killed in reported gunfights with Border Guard Bangladesh at Naikhyangchari upazila in Bandarban and Shah Parir Dwip in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Human rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra in a report said that at least one person was killed in reported gunfights with law enforcement agencies.
ASK also reported of at least 188 people were killed in such gunfights in 2020.
