Link: Three Rohingyas killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’
Three Rohingya youths were killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion personnel at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.
RAB said that the youths were involved in robbery, abduction, ransom, human trafficking and Yaba smuggling.
The victims are Jokir Ahmed, 37, Abdul Hamid, 34, and Johir Ahmed, 32.
RAB-15 deputy director Mehedi Hasan said that Jokir was the leader of Jokir Group and he had at least 17 cases filed against him with Teknaf Police Station for robbery, kidnapping, human trafficking and Yaba smuggling in past one and half a year.
RAB had information that the group was planning to kidnap a Bangladeshi NGO worker.
Based on that information, RAB raided a hill, where Jokir and his accomplices had allegedly took position, near Rohingya camp number‑26 in the afternoon.
Sensing the presence of RAB members, the suspected robbers opened fire, forcing the RAB team to retaliate, claimed RAB-15 deputy director Mehedi Hasan.
After over an hour of gunfight, the group fled the scene and the RAB team found three people shot and killed in the hill, said Mehedi.
Earlier this month, at least two Rohingyas were killed in reported gunfights with the Border Guard Bangladesh at Naikhyangchari upazila in Bandarban.
In last January, another Rohingya was killed in a gunfight with police.
Human rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra reported of at least 188 people were killed in such reported gunfights in 2020.
