‘’We condemn the role of the administration, the police authorities and also question the performance of the intelligence agencies'’

Sultana Kamal on recent attacks in the Buddhist community of Ramu.

It had taken about five to six hours from the first meeting to bringing out processions and start all the looting, arson, desecrating the pagodas and temples. There is now clear evidence that these meetings were participated by members, followers, supporters of all political parties including Awami League and BNP, presence of Jamaat people and the Rohingyas have been established too. Even the local MP as well as the Upazilla chairman were present in the evening meeting.

How come the civil administration and the police could not see what was going to happen?

The failure indicates either they are inefficient, incapable of controlling situations or they themselves supported the meetings and the following actions.

We appreciate that the home minister with other concerned high officials from the police and other forces visited the places soon after the incidents took place.

He clearly stated that the attacks were pre-planned. Then what do the intelligence agencies do?

How did they fail so miserably to warn the concerned authorities?

We condemn the role of the administration, the police authorities and also question the performance of the intelligence agencies. They all should be made accountable. The victims of such heinous communal attack must be helped to get back confidence and sense of security to live in this country with full dignity and rights. It is the responsibility of the government, other political parties and the civil society including the neighbours of the victims to stand by them, with material and mental support, with utmost sincerity.

"Minority violence is aggravated when law and order breaks down and when majoritarian interests are promoted.need to build harmony and promote plurality and tolerance in society through secular state policies'’

Hameeda Hossain, strongly feels that there should be zero tolerance for violence, and discrimination.

Both Sultana Kamal and Hameeda Hossain will be going on a solidarity visit on Tuesday to meet with the devastated community.

ASK Joined Human Chain calling Government to Investigate Real Perpetrators of Buddhist Fires

On 2nd October, ASK members  Roushan Jahan Parvin, Dilip Paul, Arpit Das, Jhorna Khanum, Korshed Alam, Salma Jabin and Hameeda Hossain joined the ‘’Nari Progati Shanghstha’’ (Womens Progressive Movement) in a human chain outside the Dhaka Press Club.

Concerned organisations and citizens demanded a proper investigation to find the  perpetrators of recent horrors in the burning of temples and terrorising the Buddhist community in Ramu, Coxs Bazaar and surrounding area.

The common theme running in the speeches were that all communities have been living side by side for hundreds of years and both are peaceful religions.  With the emergence of recent evidence, it is clear that there is an urgent need for the government to carry out a full transparent by forming a judicial enquiry commission.
