This tragic incident once again exposes the serious weaknesses in Bangladesh’s child protection system. It also highlights the growing threats to children’s safety, physical and mental well-being and their right to normal development. Such brutality against children is not only a criminal act but also a grave warning for the protection of fundamental human rights and child rights in society.

The 7-year-old child, who was rescued in a critically injured condition from a remote hilly area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram, died early Monday morning while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

In response to this incident, the organisations have expressed grave concern and strongly demanded that the relevant authorities ensure a prompt, independent and impartial investigation. They have also called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and given the highest punishment under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act in the shortest possible time.

Ensuring exemplary punishment in such heinous crimes against children is essential to deter future offences and prevent the recurrence of such brutality.

At the same time, the government, society and relevant institutions are urged to take urgent and coordinated measures to strengthen the child protection system, implement effective prevention mechanisms and ensure the safety of children.

The organisations also call upon the government to take special initiatives to raise widespread awareness on child rights and child protection through families, educational institutions, communities and the media.

The Child Rights Advocacy Coalition Bangladesh, Joining Forces Bangladesh and the National Girl Child Advocacy Forum express hope that the concerned authorities will take swift and effective action and uphold a strong commitment to protecting children’s rights and safety.

ঢাকা, ৪ মার্চ ২০২৬: চট্টগ্রামের সীতাকুণ্ডে ৭ বছর বয়সী এক শিশুকে ধর্ষণের পর নির্মমভাবে হত্যার ঘটনায় গভীর উদ্বেগ, ক্ষোভ ও তীব্র প্রতিবাদ জানিয়েছে শিশু অধিকার রক্ষায় কাজ করা সংগঠনগুলোর নেটওয়ার্ক চাইল্ড রাইটস অ্যাডভোকেসি কোয়ালিশন বাংলাদেশ, জয়েনিং ফোর্সেস বাংলাদেশ এবং জাতীয় কন্যাশিশু অ্যাডভোকেসি ফোরাম।

এই মর্মান্তিক ঘটনা বাংলাদেশের শিশু সুরক্ষা ব্যবস্থার গুরুতর দুর্বলতাকে আবারও সামনে নিয়ে এসেছে। একই সঙ্গে এটি দেশের শিশুদের নিরাপত্তা, মানসিক ও শারীরিক সুস্থতা এবং স্বাভাবিক বিকাশের ওপর ক্রমবর্ধমান হুমকির বিষয়টি স্পষ্টভাবে তুলে ধরে। শিশুদের প্রতি এ ধরনের নৃশংসতা শুধু একটি অপরাধ নয়, বরং আমাদের সমাজের মৌলিক মানবাধিকার ও শিশু অধিকারের জন্য এক গভীর সতর্কবার্তা।

চট্টগ্রামের সীতাকুণ্ড উপজেলার একটি দুর্গম পাহাড়ি এলাকা থেকে গুরুতর আহত অবস্থায় উদ্ধার হওয়া ৭ বছর বয়সী শিশুটি চট্টগ্রাম মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালের নিবিড় পরিচর্যা কেন্দ্রে (আইসিইউ) চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় সোমবার ভোররাতে মারা যায়।

এই ঘটনায় চাইল্ড রাইটস অ্যাডভোকেসি কোয়ালিশন বাংলাদেশ, জয়েনিং ফোর্সেস বাংলাদেশ এবং ন্যাশনাল গার্লস চাইল্ড অ্যাডভোকেসি ফোরাম গভীর উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করছে এবং সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে দ্রুত, স্বাধীন ও নিরপেক্ষ তদন্ত নিশ্চিত করার জোর দাবি জানাচ্ছে। একই সঙ্গে নারী ও শিশু নির্যাতন দমন আইনের আওতায় অপরাধীদের বিরুদ্ধে দ্রুততম সময়ে সর্বোচ্চ শাস্তি নিশ্চিত করার আহ্বান জানানো হয়েছে।

শিশুদের বিরুদ্ধে এ ধরনের নৃশংস অপরাধের ক্ষেত্রে দৃষ্টান্তমূলক শাস্তি নিশ্চিত করা জরুরি, যাতে ভবিষ্যতে কেউ এ ধরনের জঘন্য অপরাধ করার সাহস না পায়।

একই সঙ্গে সরকার, সমাজ এবং সংশ্লিষ্ট প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোকে যৌথভাবে শিশু সুরক্ষা ব্যবস্থা শক্তিশালী করা, কার্যকর প্রতিরোধমূলক ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ এবং শিশুদের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য জরুরি উদ্যোগ নেওয়ার আহ্বান জানানো হয়েছে।

এছাড়া পরিবার, শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান, কমিউনিটি এবং গণমাধ্যমের মাধ্যমে শিশু অধিকার ও শিশু সুরক্ষা বিষয়ে ব্যাপক সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধির জন্য সরকারের প্রতি বিশেষ উদ্যোগ গ্রহণের আহ্বান জানানো হয়েছে।

The dialogue was moderated by M. Kabir, Country Director, Terre des Hommes Netherlands, and the keynote was presented by Santa Islam, Project Officer, ASK. Mr. Shahidul Islam, Specialist- Child Rights & Protection and Country Child Safeguarding Policy Focal Point, Educo, and Tamanna Hoq Riti, Coordinator, ASK provided insightful responses to the questions in the dialogue. Among the coalition members, Mahfuza Parvin from SHAPLA NEER and Md Hanif from Action Aid were also present at the event.

More than 60 journalists from different print and electronic media outlets attended the dialogue and initiated discussions regarding various issues making this event more participatory and meaningful.

The event centered on prioritizing recommendations and outlining actionable steps. Participants, divided into five groups, engaged in in-depth discussions and presented their insights on key thematic areas of child rights. This collaborative approach strengthened the coalition’s initiatives and highlighted critical advocacy issues.

As a result of the workshop, the coalition developed a clear outline of its future activities to address child rights challenges effectively.

In their way, these children presented 20 vital child-focused recommendations from the 4th cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which is remarkable. Md. Arifur Rahman, Director (Human Rights), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paola Castro Neiderstam (Second Secretary, Program Specialist – Human Rights, Democracy and Gender Equality) of Embassy of Sweden, Shabnaaz Zahereen from UNICEF, representatives of different national and international child rights organizations and coalition members were there to observe the event. Faruq Faisel, Executive Director, ASK, moderated the event. Tamanna Hoq Riti, Coordinator (ASK), gave a brief presentation on the UPR mechanism and the preparatory sessions of the children’s Mock UPR.
