According to media sources, in the last 15 days, 119 people have been killed in the so called crossfire with the police and RAB forces and nearly 10,000 have been detained. It is alleged that the detainees are the drug smugglers, drug abusers as well as those who are involved in drug smuggling one way or the other. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) is profoundly concerned at the death of so many people in the so called crossfire with the police and RAB.<\/p>\n<p>The death of so many people in such a short span of time is completely unacceptable. In spite of government repeatedly claiming that the deaths have occurred due to \u2018crossfire\u2019, the victims\u2019 relatives and the media have been portraying a different scenario of the incidents. Already, there have been allegations against the police in the media that they accept bribes in exchange of exemption from crossfire; however, there are cases in which despite the fact that the police took money from them, the arrested persons died in crossfire. It is reported after the death of the Ward Councillor of Teknaf Municipality, Ekramul Haque, in a crossfire, that he was not at all involved in narcotics business.<\/p>\n<p>We want to remind the government again that each and every person has a right to life and to receive justice. These are his constitutional rights and are also recognised under international human rights conventions and treaties; State cannot strip off a person from these rights. State should definitely undertake measures to quell crime and social evils from the society. However, it has to follow appropriate social and legal procedures. A person has to be charged as an offender only through the judicial process of courts and not by the state forces, and punishment should be given in line with existing laws of the land.
