At least 89 women were tortured to death over dowry across the country in 2020<\/strong>
\nA 40-year-old woman from Tangail\u2019s Delduar upazila, who was set afire allegedly by her husband, has succumbed to her burn injuries while undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital.<\/p>\n

The victim, Marjina Begum, breathed her last on Wednesday evening at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, adjacent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, police have arrested her husband Swadhin Ali, 50, in this connection.<\/p>\n

The couple used to live at a rented house in Gazipur\u2019s Konabari area, said Konabari police OC Abu Siddique, adding that Swadhin had long been demanding dowry from her, triggering a regular dispute in the family.<\/p>\n

In continuation of the feud, Swadhin set Marjina on fire on February 7 at the house, from where their neighbours rescued and rushed her to a local hospital.<\/p>\n

She was later referred to DMCH, from where she was moved to the burn institute.<\/p>\n

\u201cSwadhin has been sent to jail in a case their son filed over the incident,\u201d the OC said.<\/p>\n

According to rights body Ain O Salish Kendra, at least 89 women were tortured to death and another 99 were physically humiliated over dowry across the country in 2020.<\/p>\n
