During the press conference, in response to the reporters\u2019 questions regarding the current human rights situation of the country, the organisation&#8217;s Chairperson, Senior Advocate, ZI Khan Panna, responded by addressing the current human rights situation in Bangladesh as uncomfortable.<br \/>\nIt is of ASK\u2019s utmost surprise that Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission, when asked by a private television channel about his opinion regarding the remarks of ASK\u2019s Chairperson as well as the report, he commented that the country&#8217;s human rights situation is not at all uncomfortable. Instead, he asserted that there has been a significant improvement in this area. \u201cIt is not done to say things to smear someone. Everything is finished, an uneasy situation exists-such remarks are baseless\u201d he added.<br \/>\nAin o Salish Kendra (ASK) is shocked by the remarks made by the Chairperson of the Commission. Notably, ASK&#8217;s report has been prepared based on the news published in 10 national dailies and information collected through its own sources. Such comments coming from him as the head of a state institution, established as a result of a prolonged advocacy by civil society organizations and human rights activists to defend human rights of the country is unexpected and deeply distressing. Numerous national and international human rights bodies, UN human rights mechanisms, and relevant stakeholders have been raising concerns about the prevailing human rights situation time to time. The issues concerning the shrinking space for exercising freedom of expression and other civil rights have been repeatedly highlighted in several national and international human rights reports.
