On 15 August 2025, during the commemoration of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman\u2019s death anniversary at Dhanmondi-32, rickshaw puller Md. Azizur Rahman- like many other ordinary citizens- fell victim to mob intimidation. Reports indicate that from the night of 14 August, groups of so-called \u201cmob vigilantes\u201d had stationed themselves at the venue, harassing citizens by checking personal phones, subjecting them to interrogation, and physically assaulting them throughout the day of 15 August without any restraint. Many men and women were reportedly humiliated and attacked in this unlawful manner. Among them, Azizur Rahman was beaten and forcibly handed over to the police by the mob. Shockingly, Dhanmondi police later showed him arrested in connection with an earlier attempted murder case filed during the July student movement and sent him to court as a \u201csuspected accused.\u201d Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) strongly condemns and protests this incident.<\/p>\r\n

ASK notes with concern that many innocent citizens are being harassed under the cases filed during the July movement, despite repeated assurances by responsible government officials that arrests are being made only after careful scrutiny. The arrest of an ordinary citizen- who was merely present to pay respects- under a serious criminal charge is not only unacceptable but also a grave breach of the government\u2019s stated policy and commitment to its citizens.<\/p>\r\n

ASK firmly believes that physically attacking and subsequently arresting a citizen for attending a mourning event constitutes a violation of constitutional rights. The Constitution guarantees citizens the freedom to decide where they may or may not go, and neither any group nor the state has the authority to restrict this freedom arbitrarily.<\/p>\r\n

Furthermore, ASK stresses that mourning, protest, support, silence, or expression of opinion- all fall within the ambit of fundamental rights. Suppressing these rights amounts to a direct violation of both the Constitution and human rights. If the state engages in politically motivated repression by stripping citizens of their safety and freedom, it becomes not only unacceptable but also a grave threat to democracy.<\/p>\r\n

ASK strongly urges the government to immediately withdraw this arrest, release Azizur Rahman without delay, and guarantee the constitutional rights and freedoms of all citizens.<\/p>\r\n
