On 30 August, the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is observed across the globe. In Bangladesh, too, this day is marked with deep grief, concern, and outrage. Enforced disappearance<\/em> is not only a personal or familial tragedy, but also a grave manifestation of a state\u2019s failure to protect human rights.<\/p>\n

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses its solidarity with victims of enforced disappearance and their families in Bangladesh and around the world who continue to endure the trauma of this cruel practice. Standing beside them, ASK reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the cause of human rights and justice.<\/p>\n

Over the past one and a half decades, allegations of enforced disappearances in Bangladesh have repeatedly surfaced in media reports and human rights documentation. Many families continue to wait in uncertainty for their loved ones\u2019 return. In most cases, the fate of those disappeared remains unknown. Although allegations have often been directed at state agencies, impartial investigations have rarely taken place, and the perpetrators have largely evaded accountability. This entrenched culture of disappearance has created a dangerous precedent, severely undermining the rule of law and the fundamental right to life.<\/p>\n

It is critical to uncover the underlying causes of enforced disappearances in Bangladesh. According to testimonies of victims\u2019 families, factors such as political influence, abuse of power, administrative negligence, and a pervasive culture of impunity have contributed to these incidents. Beyond judicial processes, a deeper analysis of these causes is essential, as enforced disappearance not only weakens citizens\u2019 rights but also fosters fear and insecurity across society.<\/p>\n

The interim government has recently formed a Commission on Enforced Disappearances and signed the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.<\/p>\n

ASK welcomes these initiatives as positive steps forward. At the same time, ASK hopes the Commission will discharge its mandate with a clear acknowledgment of Bangladesh\u2019s historical context, the long-standing struggles of victims, and the families\u2019 rightful expectations of justice. As a signatory to the Convention, Bangladesh bears a solemn obligation to ensure victims\u2019 safety, locate the disappeared, bring perpetrators to justice, and provide compensation and rehabilitation to victims and their families.<\/p>\n

On this International Day, ASK calls on the Government of Bangladesh to ensure justice, reparations, and protection for victims of enforced disappearance and their families. It is equally vital to guarantee the safety of their relatives and witnesses, bring all perpetrators to account with exemplary punishment, and take effective measures to prevent such gross human rights violations in the future. Such actions are not only essential for victims but also indispensable for the protection of society at large and for upholding the rule of law.<\/p>\n
