Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses grave concern over the recent trend to maintain law and order situation through \u2018Crossfire\u2019, as observed from the statements of influential people within the government and from the acts of the Law Enforcement Agencies.<\/p>\n

In recent times, the government has faced a lot of criticism due to the activities of ruling party affiliated student and youth organizations. Former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Mehedi Hasan Ajibor was accused over the July 23 shooting that left a mother and baby in her womb wounded in Magura.\u00a0 Hazaribagh Thana unit President of BCL Arzu Miah allegedly tortured a boy to death, Awami League activist Zakir Hossain was allegedly involved in the August 15 infighting in Kushtia that left AL activist Sabuj dead.<\/p>\n

It is to be noted that all three accused have been killed in “crossfire” within a couple of hours.\u00a0According to media reports, influential Minister and Party leader Obaidul Quader has said, “The government has taken a strict stance. The action has already started.” It has also been reported in media that the Prime Minister has instructed in an informal meeting held after the Cabinet meeting held on Monday to take strong stance against all criminals irrespective of their party affiliation.<\/p>\n

We welcome such decision to take strong actions against all criminals irrespective of their party affiliation. However, we would like to warn that if that strong action does not follow due process but rely on “extra-judicial killings”, then that will not play any role in improving law and order situation rather it will be considered as a severe violation of human rights. Such steps will also be considered as an attempt to protect influential people who aid criminals.<\/p>\n

We urge the government to take effective measures against all criminals irrespective of their political affiliations and want to stress that effective actions should be taken so that due legal process are followed.<\/p>\n
