{"id":6291,"date":"2015-11-01T09:50:04","date_gmt":"2015-11-01T09:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.askbd.org\/ask\/?p=6291"},"modified":"2015-11-29T16:09:27","modified_gmt":"2015-11-29T16:09:27","slug":"attacks-on-publishers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.askbd.org\/ask\/2015\/11\/01\/attacks-on-publishers\/","title":{"rendered":"ASK condemns attacks on publishers, online activists in Dhaka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ain o Salish Kendra strongly condemns the attacks in the capital&#8217;s Shahbagh and Lalmatia areas that killed a publisher and left three others injured.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to media reports, Faisal Arefin Dipan, the owner of Jagriti Publishers at Aziz Super Market in Shahbagh, was attacked at his office on 31 October 2015 afternoon, and the doctor pronounced him as dead after he was taken to the hospital. On the same day at around 2:30 pm, three people sustained serious injuries by an attack at Shuddhashar publishing house in Lalmatia and are now undergoing treatment at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>What is notable is that both the publishers published books of online activist Avijit Roy who was killed on February 2015. Shuddhashar&#8217;s publisher was threatened earlier on different occasions and he even filed complaints with the police station.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ain o Salish Kendra is protesting such heinous attacks on publishers and online activists.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Online activists this year have been the victims of a series of savage attacks and now publishing houses have come under such attacks. In this situation, we are gravely concerned about the security of online activists, authors advocating free thinking and also those involved in publishing such materials. Recurrence of such incidents has once again proved that the government took no effective measures to ensure security for the people whose lives are at risk and also failed to subject the attackers to legal actions following proper investigations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Article 39 of the Bangladesh Constitution guarantees the right of every citizen to freedom of speech and expression and Article 11 ensures the fundamental human rights and freedom.<\/em><\/strong> But lack of necessary and effective steps on the part of the state to protect lives of citizens and the recurrence of such attacks have pushed people towards extreme insecurity and fear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We strongly urge the government to arrest those who have attacked and killed online activists and publishers, and to take strong legal actions against them.
