Women's policy: What is the fuss about? »

WHY so much noise about a policy which does no more than reaffirm commitments of earlier documents? The protests by a few religious clerics surrounding the declaration of the policy by the chief advisor give rise to suspicions of political machinations. The responses of some members of the advisory council also suggest, at the least, a lack of cohesiveness or coordination in decision making by the Council of Advisors. These events have diverted us from considering the content of the policy and its continuity with previous state commitments, and from formulating an action plan.

On 8 March 2008, the chief of the present interim government declared a policy document on women development: Jatio Nari Unnayan Niti 2008. Even before this policy, we got two more policies on women development. The first one was adopted in 1997 and the other, in 2004.

No dismissal or forceful retirement for in-service disabilities »

Employees cannot be dismissed or forced to take voluntary retirement for acquiring disabilities during his/her service. In stead, they must be shifted to posts of same class, payment and benefits and when it is not possible then they should be on supernumerary post until a suitable post is available or he attains the age of retirement, whichever is earlier. A division bench of Indian supreme Court comprising Justice J P Mathur and Justice Aftab Alam delivered this judgment in the case of Bhagwan Dass & another v Punjab State Electricity Board (Civil Appeal no. 8 of 2008)on 4th Jan 2008.
