Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the arrest of journalist Anis Alamgir under the Anti-Terrorism Act. In recent times, Anis Alamgir had been vocal in criticising various government policies and actions and regularly expressed dissenting views through television talk shows and other public platforms.

ASK believes that the application of the Anti-Terrorism Act against a journalist constitutes a clear misuse of both the intent and scope of this law. A stringent law enacted to combat terrorism is being used to target freedom of expression and journalistic work, which runs contrary to the fundamental principles of a democratic state and represents a direct assault on the right to freedom of expression.

ASK further emphasises that criticism of government policies or state actions is not a criminal offence. On the contrary, independent and critical journalism is an essential pillar of accountable governance. Arrests of this nature create fear among media professionals and set a dangerous precedent for suppressing dissenting voices.

ASK strongly reiterates that freedom of expression is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution of Bangladesh. The use of harsh laws such as the Anti-Terrorism Act to curtail this right is wholly unacceptable. Any legal concerns regarding speech or publication must be addressed through transparent, fair and due legal process and arrest must not be used as a tool to silence dissent.

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) calls upon the concerned authorities to immediately withdraw the application of the Anti-Terrorism Act against journalist Anis Alamgir and to refrain from the misuse of such laws in the future to suppress dissent and undermine independent journalism.

সাংবাদিক আনিস আলমগীরকে সন্ত্রাসবিরোধী আইনে গ্রেপ্তার দেখানোর ঘটনায় আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) উদ্বেগ ও নিন্দা জানাচ্ছে । সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে সাংবাদিক আনিস আলমগীর সরকারের বিভিন্ন নীতি ও কর্মকাণ্ডের সমালোচনায় সরব ছিলেন এবং টেলিভিশন টক-শোসহ নানা মাধ্যমে ভিন্নমত পোষণ করে নিজের মতামত তুলে ধরতেন।

আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) মনে করে, একজন সাংবাদিকের বিরুদ্ধে সন্ত্রাসবিরোধী আইন প্রয়োগ করা হয়েছে, যা স্পষ্টতই আইনটির উদ্দেশ্য ও পরিধির অপপ্রয়োগের শামিল। সন্ত্রাসী কর্মকাণ্ড দমনের জন্য প্রণীত একটি কঠোর আইনকে মতপ্রকাশ ও সাংবাদিকতার ওপর প্রয়োগ করা গণতান্ত্রিক রাষ্ট্রের মৌলিক নীতির পরিপন্থী এবং মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতার ওপর সরাসরি আঘাত।

আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) আরো মনে করে, সরকার বা রাষ্ট্রীয় নীতির সমালোচনা করা কোনো অপরাধ নয়। বরং স্বাধীন ও সমালোচনামূলক সাংবাদিকতা জবাবদিহিমূলক শাসনব্যবস্থার অপরিহার্য উপাদান। এ ধরনের গ্রেপ্তার গণমাধ্যমকর্মীদের মধ্যে ভীতি সৃষ্টি করে এবং ভিন্নমত দমনের একটি বিপজ্জনক দৃষ্টান্ত স্থাপন করে।

আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) জোর দিয়ে বলতে চায়, মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা বাংলাদেশের সংবিধান স্বীকৃত মৌলিক অধিকার। এই অধিকার খর্ব করতে সন্ত্রাসবিরোধী আইনের মতো কঠোর আইন ব্যবহার করা কোনোভাবেই গ্রহণযোগ্য নয়। কোনো বক্তব্য বা প্রকাশনার ক্ষেত্রে আইনগত প্রশ্ন থাকলে তা অবশ্যই স্বচ্ছ, ন্যায়সঙ্গত ও যথাযথ আইনি প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে মোকাবিলা করা উচিত; গ্রেপ্তারকে যেন ভিন্নমত দমনের হাতিয়ার হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা না হয়।

আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) অবিলম্বে সাংবাদিক আনিস আলমগীরের বিরুদ্ধে সন্ত্রাসবিরোধী আইন প্রয়োগ প্রত্যাহার এবং ভবিষ্যতে ভিন্নমত ও সাংবাদিকতার কণ্ঠরোধে এ ধরনের আইন অপব্যবহার বন্ধের জন্য সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষের প্রতি আহবান জানাচ্ছে।
