Just a few days after the death of the college teacher Mizanur Rahman, a mother, Chapa Rani Bhoumik was run over by a motorbike and killed by the stalkers in Faridpur for protesting sexual harassment of her daughter. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) deeply condemns the incident.
Recently, sexual harassment of women by the stalkers has drastically increased. People from different spheres of the society have become vocal against such occurence. The government and administration also have taken different initiatives in this regard. As a result the magnitude of protest has been augmented. But the matter of anxiety is that despite all these progresses the stalkers could not be stopped, rather they are desperately attacking the protestors. According to our statistics based on the information published by the media, this year 145 incidents of sexual harassment have been reported so far, 25 women/girls committed suicide, 10 men and 2 women were killed while protesting such offences.
However, it is true that from the topmost level of the Government we hear promises that serious steps would be taken against such offences and no doubt some initiatives have also been taken. But the Government should look into why this trend is not declining despite such attempts. Complains have been publised that the perpetrators get shelter and support from the local leaders of the ruling party. In such cases we expect prompt and severe action from the administration. The situation is so alarming that only words are not enough, the Government and the administration must send the message through their action that no stalker will be spared. We want to see concreate action in this regard.
