Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses grave condemnation and anger over the incident of attack by outsiders on the students who were holding a demonstration to demand resignation of Vice-Chancellor Khondoker Nasiruddin of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU). The attack left 30 students and three journalists injured.
Different media sources reported students of the university have been carrying out a movement for last few days demanding resignation or suspension of VC Khondoker Nasiruddin who was accused of corruption and irregularities. Students alleged that in the face of the movement, halls stopped food supply from 20 September night and also discontinued electricity and water supply from 21 September morning. In the meantime, university authorities declared early Puja vacation from 22 September to 3 October and instructed students to vacate hall by 10 am on 21 September. However, students declared to continue the movement and not leave the halls.
At one stage students came under attack while they were on their way to the campus. The protesters informed, VC-supported perpetrators attacked them with sticks and choppers in front of Gobra Mosque, Balur Maath area, Sobhan Road and Sonakur areas which are outside the campus. During the attack, 30 student protestors and 3 university reporters were injured.
ASK thinks that university authority could have ensured a logical solution through peaceful discussion with the students and by looking into their allegations. Instead of that, announcing vacation, instructing to vacate the halls and stopping electricity and water supply in the halls is by no means acceptable. Brutal attack on the student in such a situation is very much reprehensible. ASK strongly protests this kind of heinous attack. At the same time, it demands the authority to quickly identify and give exemplary punishment to the perpetrators involved with this attack, as well as the organization demands to bring back an effective environment for study through discussion with the students.
