Unrest, attacks on puja mandaps, and clashes erupted in the city after a picture of Quran desecration in a mandap in Cumillawas spread on social media. At the same time, 3 people were killed and several others were injured in clashes at different places, especially in Chandpur. Puja mandaps across various parts of the country were attacked too. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK)is deeply concerned and strongly condemns the incident. ASK firmly demands to conduct an impartial investigation and find out the responsible persons attempting to create such anarchy by spreading tension and violence through social media and in various other ways and ensure fair trial in this regard. At the same time, it also demands to ensure the highest security for the Hindu communities and Puja mandaps to bring the situation under control.
Despite repeated invocations made by various government officials to ensure maximum security, such incident centering, the main religious festival of Hindus, i.e. Durga Puja, is highly a deplorable act. The evil forces that are doing this are challenging the government’s commitment to religious harmony, the constitution and human rights above all. ASK thinks that social media, especially Facebook authorities, have a responsibility to identify those involved in such propaganda. This is a very pertinent question that how they are allowing such content to be published and go viral. Considering the issue of social responsibility, ASK thinks that it is essential for the social media authorities to play a responsible role in this regard. On the other hand, religious leaders often do not play a responsible role in these cases. ASK notices that in case of such emergencies, their opinions or actions often magnifies tension rather than playing a satisfactory role for the greater interest, Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) firmly believes that the recurrence of such incidents are due to a lack of proper investigation and absence of trial of previous incidents of religious intolerance and terrorism using various propaganda through social media, which is creating insecurity and fear among the country’s various religious minorities. Therefore, it is very important to ensure justice by identifying those responsible for spreading religious intolerance in different parts of the country including Cumilla and Chandpur. ASK expects the authorities to take immediate action.
