Police Attack on Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology: Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK)’s Concern

Police has carried out attack on students protesting peacefully at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Many students were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. urges the university authority to immediately fulfill the demands of the students to ensure a conducive environment for education.
According to media reports, on 16 January 2022, police fired bullets, rubber bullets and sound grenades at the students to disperse the peaceful movement of the protestors demanding three points including resignation of the Provost of Sirajunnesa Hall. More than 50 students were injured, many of whom are still undergoing treatment at different hospitals. Besides, the university administration has also instructed the students to vacate the hall by today (17 January 2022). On one hand, many students were injured by such police attacks without provocation, while on the other hand, the order to vacate the hall in the shortest possible time, has thrown them into extreme crisis.
According to Article 37 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, every citizen has the right to assemble peacefully. However, this right of the students has been violated due to such violent attacks and the use of force by the police. ASK thinks that it is the responsibility of the university authority to provide overall security to the students. Police cannot take such unsolicited action on the university campus without the permission of the authorities. In addition to using force such as sound grenades on students, police also charged batons on the students, which is totally unexpected. The university authorities cannot avoid the responsibility for such unfortunate incidents. It is the failure of the university administration that it could not properly address the student movement.
