Man Died Allegedly by Police Torture in Sunamganj: ASK’s Deep Concerns and Demand to Ensure Justice through Fair Investigation

A man named Ujir Mia (40) allegedly died in police custody in Shantiganj, Sunamganj. In addition, police officers have been accused of trying to cover up the incident with money. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) is deeply concerned about this incident. At the same time, ASK demands to take immediate action against the accused and provide compensation to the affected families, subject to a speedy and impartial investigation.

According to media sources, on 10 February 2022, the police of Shantiganj police station arrested Ujir Mia on a charge of theft in Shatrumardan village of Sunamganj. Later, on 11 February, after Ujir Mia was released from bail, he fell seriously ill and was immediately admitted to the hospital. On 21 February Ujir Mia died. His family alleged that he was inhumanely tortured at the police station. His family further added that Ujir Mia himself informed his family that he was brutally tortured at the police station and threatened to death in various ways. On the other hand, after the death of Ujir Mia, eyewitnesses confirmed the marks of injuries on his body.

According to ASK, the death of Ujir Mia in police custody is a clear violation of Article 35 (5) of the Bangladesh Constitution and Section 13 (1) of the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act 2013. ASK urges a thorough and unbiased inquiry into the incident, as well as strong punishment for those responsible.
