Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) strongly condemns and expresses deep concern over the unjustified use of force by the police against government primary school teachers during their assembly and march, including baton charges and the use of hot water from water cannons.

According to media reports, on 8 November in Shahbagh, Dhaka, police dispersed teachers who were participating in a peaceful march to press three demands by indiscriminately using batons, tear gas shells, sound grenades and water cannons. As a result, at least 150 teachers were reportedly injured.

ASK notes that Article 37 of the Constitution of Bangladesh clearly guarantees every citizen the right to assemble and hold peaceful gatherings. The excessive use of force by law enforcement in this incident constitutes a clear violation of fundamental rights and civil liberties. At the same time, the absence of any constructive initiative from the government to address the teachers’ legitimate demands is deeply disappointing.

ASK emphasizes that teachers are the cornerstone of building the nation’s future generations. Violence against them is not only a violation of human rights but also raises serious questions about the State’s commitment to the education system. Similar actions against Ebtedayi madrasa teachers in recent times further underscore a troubling pattern. It remains unclear how law enforcement agencies can repeatedly resort to such harsh measures without clear government directives.

ASK demands immediate accountability and disciplinary action against those responsible for the excessive use of force, as well as the provision of adequate medical treatment for the injured teachers. ASK also urges the authorities to give due importance to the teachers’ demands and to pursue a lasting resolution through meaningful dialogue.

শিক্ষকদের ওপর পুলিশের হামলার ঘটনায় আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) এর তীব্র নিন্দা ও গভীর উদ্বেগ

সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষকদের সমাবেশ ও পদযাত্রায় পুলিশের অযৌক্তিক বলপ্রয়োগ, জলকামান থেকে গরম পানি নিক্ষেপ ও লাঠিচার্জের ঘটনায় আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) গভীর উদ্বেগ ও তীব্র নিন্দা জানাচ্ছে।

গণমাধ্যমে প্রকাশিত সংবাদ সুত্রে জানা যায়, ৮ নভেম্বর ঢাকার শাহবাগে তিন দফা দাবিতে শান্তিপূর্ণ পদযাত্রায় অংশ নেওয়া শিক্ষকদের ওপর পুলিশ নির্বিচারে লাঠিচার্জ, টিয়ার গ্যাসের শেল, সাউন্ড গ্রেনেড নিক্ষেপ এবং জল কামান থেকে পানি ছিটিয়ে তাদের ছত্রভঙ্গ করে দেয়। এতে আহত হয়েছেন কমপক্ষে দেড় শতাধিক শিক্ষক।

আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) মনে করে বাংলাদেশ সংবিধানের ৩৭ অনুচ্ছেদে স্পষ্টভাবে বলা হয়েছে, শান্তিপূর্ণভাবে সভা-সমাবেশ করার অধিকার প্রত্যেক নাগরিকের রয়েছে। কিন্তু এ ঘটনায় পুলিশের অতিরিক্ত বলপ্রয়োগ মৌলিক অধিকার ও নাগরিক স্বাধীনতার স্পষ্ট লঙ্ঘন। অন্যদিকে, সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে এখনো শিক্ষকদের যৌক্তিক দাবি নিয়ে গঠনমূলক কোনো পদক্ষেপ দেখা যায়নি, যা দুঃখজনক।

আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) মনে করে, শিক্ষক সমাজ জাতির ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্ম গঠনের মূলভিত্তি। তাদের ওপর হামলা শুধু মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘন নয়, বরং শিক্ষাব্যবস্থার প্রতি রাষ্ট্রের দায়বদ্ধতাকেও প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ করে। সম্প্রতি ইবতেদায়ি মাদ্রাসা শিক্ষকদের প্রতিও একই ধরনের আচরণ লক্ষ্য করা গেছে, যা উদ্বেগজনক। সরকারের কোনো ধরনের নির্দেশনা ছাড়া আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী কীভাবে এমন কঠোর পদক্ষেপ বারবার নিতে পারে তা বোধগম্য নয়।

আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) অবিলম্বে অতিরিক্ত বল প্রয়োগের ঘটনায় দায়ী ব্যক্তিদের বিরুদ্ধে শাস্তিমূলক ব্যবস্থা এবং আহত শিক্ষকদের যথাযথ চিকিৎসা নিশ্চিত করার দাবি জানাচ্ছে। পাশাপাশি, শিক্ষকদের দাবিগুলো গুরুত্বসহকারে পর্যালোচনা করে সংলাপের মাধ্যমে সমস্যার স্থায়ী সমাধান করতে সংশ্লিষ্টদের প্রতি আহ্বান জানাচ্ছে।
