According to media reports, journalists were targeted in a shooting incident in Khulna. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses its deep concern over the incident and strongly condemns the attack.
According to the reports, at around 12:00 midnight on 14 July 2026, several journalists were gathered near the United Nations Shishu Park in Khulna city after completing their professional duties when armed assailants arrived on motorcycles and opened fire at them. One journalist sustained injuries from bullet splinters. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of journalists and the environment in which they are expected to carry out their professional responsibilities freely and independently.
ASK believes that such attacks against journalists are not only an assault on their lives and personal security but also a direct attack on freedom of expression, press freedom and the public’s right to information. Any attempt to intimidate journalists or obstruct them from carrying out their professional responsibilities through violence is contrary to democratic values and fundamental human rights.
ASK further believes that ensuring the safety of journalists and enabling them to carry out their professional responsibilities free from fear, intimidation and harassment is part of the State’s constitutional and international human rights obligations. Article 39 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh guarantees freedom of thought and expression and freedom of the press. Ensuring the safety of journalists is essential for the effective implementation of these constitutional guarantees. Furthermore, Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) obliges the State to take effective measures to protect the right to freedom of expression.
ASK calls upon the relevant authorities to immediately conduct a prompt, impartial and effective investigation into the incident, swiftly identify those responsible and bring them to justice. ASK also urges the authorities to take effective measures to ensure the safety of journalists and to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

গনমাধ্যমে প্রকাশিত সংবাদ সুত্রে জানা যাচ্ছে, খুলনায় সাংবাদিকদের লক্ষ্য করে গুলিবর্ষণের ঘটনা ঘটেছে। এ ঘটনায় আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) গভীর উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করছে এবং তীব্র নিন্দা জানাচ্ছে।
গণমাধ্যমে প্রকাশিত সংবাদ অনুযায়ী, ১৪ জুলাই ২০২৬ তারিখে রাত ১২ টার দিকে খুলনা নগরীর জাতিসংঘ শিশুপার্ক সংলগ্ন এলাকায় কয়েকজন সাংবাদিক পেশাগত দায়িত্বপালন শেষে আড্ডারত অবস্থায় থাকাকালে মোটরসাইকেলে আসা সশস্ত্র দুর্বৃত্তরা তাদের লক্ষ্য করে গুলিবর্ষণ করে। গুলির স্প্লিন্টারের আঘাতে একজন সাংবাদিক আহত হয়েছেন। ঘটনাটি সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা এবং স্বাধীনভাবে পেশাগত দায়িত্ব পালনের পরিবেশ নিয়ে গভীর উদ্বেগ সৃষ্টি করেছে।
আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) মনে করে, সাংবাদিকদের ওপর এ ধরনের হামলা শুধু ব্যক্তির জীবন ও নিরাপত্তার ওপর আঘাত নয়; এটি মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা, গণমাধ্যমের স্বাধীনতা এবং জনগণের তথ্য জানার অধিকারের ওপরও সরাসরি আঘাত। সাংবাদিকদের ভয়ভীতি প্রদর্শন বা সহিংসতার মাধ্যমে তাদের পেশাগত দায়িত্ব পালনে বাধা সৃষ্টি করার যে কোনো প্রচেষ্টা গণতান্ত্রিক মূল্যবোধ ও মানবাধিকারের পরিপন্থী।
আসক আরো মনে করে, সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করা এবং তারা যেন ভয়-ভীতি ও হয়রানিমুক্ত পরিবেশে পেশাগত দায়িত্ব পালন করতে পারেন, তা নিশ্চিত করা রাষ্ট্রের সাংবিধানিক ও আন্তর্জাতিক মানবাধিকার বিষয়ক বাধ্যবাধকতার অংশ। বাংলাদেশ সংবিধানের ৩৯ অনুচ্ছেদে মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা এবং সংবাদপত্রের স্বাধীনতার যে নিশ্চয়তা প্রদান করা হয়েছে, তা কার্যকরভাবে বাস্তবায়নের জন্য সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করা অপরিহার্য। একই সঙ্গে আন্তর্জাতিক নাগরিক ও রাজনৈতিক অধিকার বিষয়ক চুক্তি (আইসিসিপিআর) -এর ১৯ অনুচ্ছেদও মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতার সুরক্ষা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য রাষ্ট্রকে কার্যকর ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণের বাধ্যবাধকতা আরোপ করেছে।
আইন ও সালিশ কেন্দ্র (আসক) অবিলম্বে এ ঘটনার সুষ্ঠু,ও নিরপেক্ষ তদন্তের মাধ্যমে জড়িতদের দ্রুত শনাক্ত করে আইনের আওতায় এনে শাস্তি নিশ্চিত করার দাবি জানাচ্ছে। একই সঙ্গে সাংবাদিকদের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করতে যথাযথ পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ এবং ভবিষ্যতে এ ধরনের ঘটনার পুনরাবৃত্তি রোধে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণের জন্য সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষের প্রতি আহ্বান জানাচ্ছে।
