To mark the International Day for Universal Access to Information, AVAS and OWDEB organized community awareness activities on 29 and 30 September 2026 in Chattogram and Barishal under the ‘Engage Now’ project, engaging a total of 87 participants. The activities brought together members of Manobadhikar Nari Parishad (MNP), Manobadhikar Songrokkhon Parishad (MSP), and Youth Girls Group (YGG) to discuss the Right to Information (RTI), citizens’ legal rights, and the importance of transparency and accountability. AVAS explained key provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2009, including procedures for requesting information from public authorities and pursuing appeals or complaints when information is not provided within the prescribed time frame. OWDEB highlighted how access to information supports informed decision-making and civic engagement. Participants improved their understanding of RTI and recognized the importance of sharing this knowledge within their communities. AVAS also organized a rally to expand public awareness. Both activities highlighted limited awareness of RTI among women and marginalized groups. Regular community-level awareness sessions, practical guidance on RTI applications and inclusive outreach were recommended to strengthen citizens’ access to information and promote accountable governance.
These activities were implemented under the EngageNow project, part of the Nagorikata: Civic Engagement Fund (CEF) programme, with support from the Embassy of Switzerland, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and European Union (EU).
