Disappeared Persons’ Families Harassed by the Law Enforcement Agencies: Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK)’s Concern

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has learnt from various sources that members of the Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) have been interacting with the families of forcibly disappeared persons for the past few days and harassing them by asking various questions or information. At the same time, they have been attempting to force the families to sign a written document stating that the disappeared person is not a victim of forced disappearance but rather is in hiding.
Such conduct of the LEAs is completely illegal. Rather than strengthening its efforts to find these people who have been missing for a long time and identify those involved, such actions of LEAs are unacceptable. The bereaved families have been waiting for their missing relatives to return for a long time; they have been already living in a constant state of insecurity and fear. Harassing them in this way is making them even more distressed. Such actions are, in fact, highlighting the negligence on the part of the LEAs to locate the missing persons. ASK has long argued that, instead of denying the complaints of human rights violation, efforts must be made to conduct fair investigation and ensure accountability into these instances. Such behavior of the LEAs is undermining the fundamental constitutional rights and human rights of the citizens of the country and paving the way for further impairment in the future.
