On 5th January 2014, a violent clash between Hindu and Muslim Communities erupted from Election clashes. BNP-Jamaat cadres carried out attacks on the Hindus in Gareya Gopalpur Union of Thakurgaon. The perpetrators vandalised and looted 15-20 shops at the Dewnia Bazar. Attacks and counter attacks continued through the day. Two BNP-Jamaat cadres were terribly injured in the incident and one died later. The people of the Hindu community were left in a state of fear and insecurity as they received several threats from the BNP-Jamaat cadres. They had taken shelter at Iskon temple, located near their area where Army, RAB, Police and BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) officials provided security all night.
