Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) strongly condemns and expresses grave concern over the speech of police encouraging the public to take the law into their hands in their endeavor to raise public awareness against drug abuse.
From the newspaper sources we came to know that about 300 law enforcement officers of 5 police stations from Tejgaon, conducted a raid in Karwan Bazar to apprehend drug dealers, stop illegal drug peddling and raise awareness amongst the masses. During the operation, they used the fallowing language while urging the public “Drive them out of the area by breaking their limbs”.
We believe no one has the right to take the law into their own hands, not even the police officers. Such encouragement to opt for extrajudicial ways is an affront to establishing the rule of law.
We heard such irresponsible remarks from the police several times in the past. We demand the Government to take appropriate measures to impede the law enforcement officers from giving such comments and adopt proper legal procedures to end drug peddling.
