ASK’s Grave Concern and Protest about Young Man Beaten to Death in Presence of Police

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses grave concern on and protest the death of a person, named Shamsuddin Milon, in mob beating after getting him down from a police vehicle on July 27, 2011 at Charkakra of Companyganj in Noakhali district.

According to different media, in the morning of July 27, 2011 Shamsuddin Milon was subjected to mob beating after the police pushed him down from a police vehicle at Companyganj of Noakhali district. He died as a consequence. Once the death had been confirmed police took away the dead body of Shamsuddin Milon.

We know that it is the duty of the law enforcing agencies to protect the property and person of the citizens. In spite of performing their duties properly, police caused Milon, who was in their custody, to get down from their vehicle and to be killed in mob beating, the responsibility of which they cannot deny. From the media, it is also known that 3 policemen were temporarily suspended for negligence in duty. But we don’t think that it is a case of negligence in duty by the police. Here, the policemen themselves were actively involved in the occurrence and they should be brought into the legal proceedings under the same counts of criminal responsibility.

We hope that the concerned authority will take effective steps to prevent such propensity by bringing the real criminals including the alleged members of police to justice.
