ASK expresses its grave concern over the incident of fifty persons being injured in a clash by the activists of Hossain Mokbul Shahriar, MP demanding quota in recruiting employees to Rangpur Medical College.

Different media reported that Hossain Mokbul Shahriar, the MP from Rangpur-1 constituency in the National Parliament, had been demanding quota in recruiting 3rd and 4th grade employees to Rangpur Medical College. Yesterday on January 28, 2012 the MP and his followers got involved in a clash with the employees of the hospital and police as they surrounded the hospital and consequently, the medical services in the hospital remained closed for a while. Fifty persons including the MP himself and some journalists were injured in the clash. It is unfortunate that the attack was led by the local MP.

We would like to see that in case of any problem or irregularity in a constituency the concerned MP would draw attention of the appropriate authority for necessary action. But in this case the MP himself got involved in the clash. We also hope that the MPs themselves would not influence any government recruitment in their respective constituencies; rather they take an effective role in preventing such undue and undesirable interference.
