Killing of Pakistani HR Activist Sabin Mehmud: ASK’s condolence and grave concern

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses deep condolence and grave concern over the killing of noted Pakistani activist Sabeen Mehmud.

On 24 May 2015 (Friday), Sabeen had been on the way home from her organisation ‘The Second Floor (T2F)’ along with her mother while she was shot five times by some miscreants. She died on the way to the hospital. Her mother also sustained bullet wounds during the attack and is now hospitalised for medical treatment.

Sabeen Mehmud was a noted human rights activist in Pakistan. On 24 May 2015, her organisation T2F organised a discussion meeting on Baluchistan’s politics and human rights situation. Earlier this month, this discussion meeting was cancelled at University of Lahore due to pressure by the security agency.

The killing of a renowned and outspoken human rights activist Sabeen Mehmud indicates the extreme risky condition for human rights activists in Pakistan. The government of Pakistan did not bring any of the perpetrators to justice, when previously too similar attacks have taken place on human rights activists, journalists and aid workers.

ASK condemns this brutal killing and also urges the government of Pakistan to take appropriate measures to find out the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
