Recent decision by the law enforcers to monitor the writings of free thinkers : Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) Deeply Concerned

Various government agencies will conduct strong surveillance over Face book and Blogs, and arrest those people who will write anything offensive to religion. It was published in different print media that this decision has been taken by Cabinet Committee on Law and Order in the meeting held on Sunday (9 August 2015). Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses deep concern over this decision.  On the same day, in a press briefing at the Police Headquarters, the Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque advised the blog writers “not to cross their limit.

When one after another free thinkers are becoming victims of gruesome murders, and the police are failing to identify and arrest the killers, this kind of statement from the law enforcement agency, or, the decision to arrest the secular writers, is extremely frustrating and unwarranted. This kind of statement or decision will undoubtedly encourage the perpetrators and made secular writers more insecure.

While expressing opinion, a person should act responsible. But to define that responsibility through law, to provide police force the power to arrest on the basis of mere suspicion, , to make the crime non bailable, to provide harsh punishments like 14 years of jail , which are the provisions of present laws of the country will not  ensure freedom of speech and expression.

Moreover, when finding out the whereabouts of killers and ensuring their exemplary punishment should be the highest priority, decision of the law enforcement agencies to arrest secular writers, or to advise them to mind their limit, is not a sensible and timely decision. On the contrary, this will certainly encourage the criminals. We would like to remind the government that, the irresponsible acts by the law enforcement agencies have had significantly contributed in creation of current frightening atmosphere for the free thinkers.

We therefore, urge the Government to be rational and rights based in handling the situation.
