BCL attack on SUST teachers: ASK’s grave concern and condemnation

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses grave concern and condemns the attack of Bangladesh Chhatra Legaue (ruling party student wing) on the protesting teachers who demanded resignation of Dr. Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, Vice-Chancellor, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.

According to media reports, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) academic council was scheduled to meet on 30 August 2015. Therefore, a faction of protesting teachers staged a pre-scheduled sit in front of Vice-Chancellor’s office on that day. On the other hand, Bangladesh Chhatra Legaue (BCL) activists were gathered at the same place from 7 am under the banner of general students. The protesting teachers tried to obstruct the Vice-Chancellor from entering into his office around 8:30 am. At that time, BCL activists shoved the protesting teachers and assaulted them. According to Professor Syed Shamsul Haque who led the protesting teachers, at least seven teachers got injured by this attack.

However, the BCL Vice-President denied the involvement of his party activists on this incident. He also stated that the protesting teachers tried to obstruct the Vice-Chancellor and at that time, general students helped him to enter into the office. According to media reports, Aktar Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge of Jalalabad Police Station, tried to calm both the parties but BCL activists did not listen to him.

ASK strongly condemns the attack by Bangladesh Chhatra Legaue on teachers. We strongly urge the concerned authorities to take stern action against the perpetrators immediately.
