Ain o Salish Kendra expresses grave concern over the eviction drive at a slum in the capital’s Kallyanpur.
According to media reports, the eviction drive at the land of Housing and Building Research Institute under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works in Kallyanpur area began at noon today (21 January 2016). Earlier in the morning, the authorities of the institute asked the slum dwellers to move out with all their personal belongings within two hours.
Today, at noon, the High Court issued a rule to stay the eviction drive for three months in response to a petition filed by ASK. Locals, however, claimed that the eviction drive was forcibly continued in defiance of the High Court order.
We think that evicting a slum this way without taking rehabilitation measures for slum dwellers is a clear violence of their fundamental rights. Also, it is a cause for concern that the eviction drive was not stopped in spite of the High Court order.
Ain o Salish Kendra strongly condemns the incident of eviction drive and urges the authorities concerned to comply with the stay order issued by the High Court.
