An allegation has been brought against two leaders of Cumilla Chattra League of threatening to shoot journalists dead. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses strong condemnation and protest over such offensive and unacceptable comments by student leaders.
According to media reports, on the night of 19 July 2019, the allegation against Joint General Secretary Shoeb Hasan and President Md. Rayhan, two leaders of Chattra League’s Cumilla University wing was brought for threatening journalists. Media reports further revealed that one of the two leaders attempted to attack the journalists saying “I’ll shoot. Bullets don’t recognise journalists. I’ll shoot and kill journalists whenever I find them.” Shoeb Hasan has already admitted that he said that out of anger.
ASK considers these comments are a threat to freedom of press and the safety of journalists. ASK is appalled by such kinds of comments and attitudes from student leaders, and believes that such comments give a wrong message to other leaders and activists. They should immediately apologise to the journalists for their comments. Besides, ASK urges to take strict organisational measures against them.
