In Karimganj district of Assam, India, three Bangladeshis were beaten to death by locals on suspicion of cattle theft. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) considers such an incident to be a gross violation of the right to life and access to justice of any human being. ASK strongly condemns and protests this incident. At the same time, ASK urges the Indian authorities to take action against those involved, subject to an impartial investigation.
According to local sources cited in Indian media reports, the incident took place near the border in the Bogrijan tea garden area, Patharkandi police station. On the night of 18 July 2020, a group of five or six people entered that area. The locals attacked them and beat them to death on suspicion that they entered to steal the cows. The local police have confirmed that they were Bangladeshi nationals.
ASK believes that such extrajudicial killings simply out of suspicion are in no way justifiable. Itis an extreme violation of human rights to carry out such barbaric acts without informing the local police administration and without taking their cooperation. In order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, ASK is urging the Indian authorities to impartially investigate the incident immediately and provide legal punishment to those involved. ASK hopes that the Bangladesh government will send a clear message to the Indian government in this regard and make strong diplomatic efforts to ensure justice for those involved in the incident.
