Homes of Cumilla Minority Community Attacked: ASK’s Demand to Take Legal Steps after Identification of Perpetrators

After the violence following rumours about hurting religious sentiments in Ramu, Nasirnagar and Gangachara, some local miscreants have now attacked and set ablaze the houses of people from the Hindu community in Cumilla. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses grave concern on this incident and demands that a fair and impartial investigation be conducted to identify those involved and take legal steps against them accordingly. ASK urges the appropriate authority to take coordinated steps to ensure the security of people from minority communities and prevent any type of communal instigation or propaganda against them.

According to news media reports, the attack took place on the evening of 1 November 2020 in Korbanpur village, of 4 no Purbo Dhair Union, Bangra Police Station, Muradnagar Upazila, Cumilla. About nine to ten houses were attacked and ransacked. This created a sense of fear among Hindu families residing there. The police are of the opinion that an organised group is behind this attack. It is to be noted that on 21 October in Korbanpur, there was some commotion regarding an individual’s Facebook post. Following that, the police had arrested two people on 1 November sending them to jail. Based on this incident, the attack took place on the evening of 1 November.

Understandably, this incident has created an extreme sense of insecurity and panic among the minority communities as well as the general citizens in the area. ASK believes that such incidents continued to repeat since fair trial could not be ensured for previous cases of communal violence. ASK demands that the government takes immediate steps to prevent such incident from recurring and to take appropriate steps against those involved in these attacks.
