Attack on Khasi Village, Moulvibazar: Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK)’s Strong Protest and Demand to Take Quick Action against those Involved

There has been an attack on the people of Ichhachhara Khasia Punji village in Kulaura Upazila village, Moulvibazar district. During the attack, the village church was damaged and one person was injured. The attack happened within hours of an eviction drive led by the Upazila Administration where an illegal occupant from the betel leaf plantation of a Khasia villager was evicted. Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expresses grave concern on this incident and demands immediate legal action to be taken against those involved.

According to news reports, around 7 pm on 10 November 2020, Rafik Ali, the one who was evicted from the plantation of a Khasia villager, ransacked a tea stall in the area and attacked the Khasia Punji church with a group of 50-60 men armed with local weapons. The attackers also threw rocks targeting the houses of the Khasia people on the hills, during which one person was injured.

ASK expresses its severe condemnation and protest over this incident. ASK fears that such an attack on the ethnic minority Khasias will create a sense of insecurity within the community. ASK demands the administration to immediately take legal steps against those involved. ASK also demands coordinated initiatives to prevent such attacks and attempts to illegally occupy the lands of this community in the future.
